Sunday 27th March 2011, Burroughs Park, Kick-Off 11:00am, Essex Cordell Under 13s Cup supported by Chelmsford Radio and Tesco Final.
Westward Boys completed a terrific county cup double as two second half goals clinched the Essex Cordell Under 13s Cup, adding to the London equivalent they won just seven days earlier, and the youngsters have been rewarded with entry into the prestigious Tesco Cup amongst winners from all over the Country.
Manager Shaun White was duly proud of the talented group of players at his disposal and afterwards he said: “To follow the London Cup with winning the Essex County Cup is really fantastic and now we go into the Tesco Cup, where we will be joined by Copeland Colts, and will go there and try to get to the final. We will certainly try and go as far as we can!â€
Shaun was quick to praise his team, but also understands the success is not just down to what happens on the pitch. He said: “I’d also like to thank the fantastic support all the parents have given us, it really helps and is hugely appreciated. Also the Essex County FA, who have been very supportive all season and today as well as our league and management. It’s been a real team effort and we’re delighted.â€
It was Copeland who enjoyed much of the early possession and they created the first opening of the game when Fraser Williams saw his 20-yard shot held by goalkeeper Rhys Hughes. Minutes later, Elliott Cornish found himself through on goal only for Hughes to produce a fine save, tipping an angled shot around the post.
From that point, however, Westward restricted Copeland to mere half chances as they looked to get a stronghold on the game themselves, threatening before the break when Darnell Bailey-King was played in on goal only to find Copeland ‘keeper Ethan Thomas in fine form.
It was after the break that Westward clinched the game and they took the lead on 54 minutes, Roche Bailey finishing a strong run into the penalty area with a low angled shot into the far corner. Bailey-King then saw his lob bounce off the crossbar before he doubled the lead on 66 with a fine finish along the floor following a neat assist by Matthew Bentley.
Frontman Bailey-King could have grabbed a third when he was through on goal, only to be denied once again by Thomas, but the final had already been clinched as Westward completed an impressive double and lifted the silverware at full time.
